Can Throuples Really Work? Dr. Viviana Breaks Down 90 Day Fiancé Drama | Through the Drama

Have you ever wondered how throuples—three-person romantic relationships—really work? I recently sat down with the incredible hosts of the Through the Drama podcast to unpack this complex and often misunderstood dynamic. As a relationship and intimacy expert, I’ve seen firsthand that love doesn’t always follow traditional rules. And honestly? That’s okay.

In this episode, we dove into everything from communication struggles and boundary-setting to jealousy, societal pressure, and how to make a throuple relationship work in the real world—not just in theory or fantasy. Whether you’re curious about polyamory, exploring your options, or simply want to understand more about how modern relationships are evolving, this conversation offers valuable insights for everyone.

Here are a few key takeaways from our discussion:

1. Throuples need just as much structure (if not more) than traditional couples.
Without a clear foundation of trust, communication, and mutual respect, things can unravel quickly. I share how I help clients establish healthy agreements that support each person’s emotional and physical needs.

2. Jealousy isn’t the enemy—it’s information.
Instead of avoiding the topic, I encourage individuals in throuples to use jealousy as a signal: What are you afraid of losing? What boundary may need to be reinforced? These are questions I guide my clients through all the time.

3. Throuples aren’t always sexual—and that’s okay.
It was important for me to emphasize that not all throuples are based on sexual connection. Some are deeply emotional, others are logistical (co-parenting or cohabitating), and many are a blend of all three. There’s no one-size-fits-all.

4. Non-traditional doesn’t mean non-committed.
Just because a relationship structure looks different doesn’t mean it lacks depth, loyalty, or seriousness. We have to challenge that bias if we want to support diverse relationship experiences.

I’m so grateful to the Through the Drama with Chris and Lauren team for welcoming this conversation with honesty, humor, and heart. If you’ve ever felt like your love life doesn’t “fit the mold,” know that you’re not alone—and you’re not doing it wrong.
